Andy Smith

Lifelong supporter passes away

The club is sad to learn about the passing of lifelong fan Andy Smith.

Andy started watching Quakers in the 1960s and then later took his family to games. He also supported the club through his company Baydale, whom many fans will remember.

His son, Jamie said; “Dad supported Darlington from a young age. His favourite player was Lance Robson and his favourite memory was of Lance smashing a goalkeeper into the net in front of the Tin Shed. He followed Darlington through the 70s and 80s before he started to bring his two sons (Ryan and me) in the late 80s. From then on, we followed the club both home and away, through thick and thin; from Welling to Wembley. In the first visit to Wembley, dad ran a coach from the Cally, what great memories.

“Dad and his brother Jon owned Baydale who, once they became successful, sponsored Darlington with programme adverts, pitch side boards, ball and matchday sponsors at Feethams. They sponsored the last ever game at the ground where he insisted on having Neil Wainwright’s boots, as he was the last player to score on the pitch (although it was a header).

“Dad even married his wife, Wendy, at Feethams in what was the best day of his life.

“At the arena, Baydale were sponsors again, with their own box at the new stadium. They also sponsored other clubs and football teams in the town including the RA, Spraire Lads, Darlington rugby club and many, many pub teams in local football.

“In 2002, dad was diagnosed with MS which impacted on his health in the coming years, affecting his ability to attend games. He always looked out for results, always sported DFC shirts and missed going to the games.

“Many Darlington fans will remember my dad, I'm sure. He loved the club.” 💙

Andy’s funeral is at 11am on Friday 13th October at Darlington Crematorium, and afterwards at Darlington RA.

Everyone at Darlington FC would like to pass on their sincere condolences to Andy's family and friends.
