Billy McEwan

Former manager passes away

The club is sad to learn about the passing of our former manager Billy McEwan at the age of 70.

Billy took over as manager from Ray Hankin in the summer of 1992, after we had been relegated back to the Fourth Division following one season in the Third.

After his playing career ended in 1983, Billy managed Sheffield United and Rotherham before being appointed our manager in 1992.

He undertook a rebuilding job and brought in several youngsters such as Simon Shaw, and in his first season we finished in 15th place. However, he left in October 1993 and was succeeded by Alan Murray.

He then went on to be a coach at Derby County and also manager of York City and Mansfield.

Everyone at Darlington FC would like to pass on their condolences to Billy's family and friends.
