Darlington 1 AFC Fylde 0

Charman (30 mins, 1-0)

Attendance 1,302

Luke Charman's tenth goal of the season earned Quakers their first ever win over league leaders Fylde.

The former Newcastle striker broke through on the half hour mark, and after that Quakers put in a great defensive display, with the highlight a superb one handed save by Tommy Taylor, to earn the points.

Quakers started with a flat back four, Jake Cooper playing at right back.

The game started at a fast pace, and after Quakers stopped a couple of early attacks, forced the first corner at the other end which came to nothing.

Quakers almost scored in the sixth minute, when Luke Charman volleyed just wide of the right hand post from another right wing corner.

Charman then made ground towards the penalty area and tried a right foot shot that went wide.

After 15 minutes Charman did well to win possession on the right and race into the box, but his pull back for Jarrett Rivers was intercepted.

Quakers nearly scored on 21 minutes. Ben Hedley found Rivers with a good crossfield ball, and Rivers chipped the ball into the middle where Will Hatfield, charging in, headed just over the top.

After forcing the pace of the game, Quakers deservedly took the lead on 30 minutes. The ball came out to Wheatley on the edge of the box, and he played the ball through for Charman, to turn and crash a terrific left foot shot across the keeper into the top right corner of the net!

That was his tenth goal of the season.

It was nearly 2-0 when Jack Lambert picked the ball up on the half way line, spotted Jones off his line and tried his luck, and his effort along the ground went a few yards wide.

Half time Darlington 1 Fylde 0

Fylde broke away from a Darlington free kick on 52 minutes and the ball was played from the left across the face of goal, but Sampson couldn’t get a touch.

Charman was always looking dangerous and he made a good run up the left hand side into the area before he lost possession.

Fylde created a chance when sub Perkins crossed from the right and the ball was half cleared to Ben Tollitt, who fired well over the top.

Quakers were content to soak up the pressure from the Fylde attack, with Danny Ellis and Jake Lawlor getting in some timely headers, although Tommy Taylor turned a right foot shot wide from Nick Haughton.

George Smith came on for Joe Wheatley on 76 minutes, and he won a corner two minutes later that was cleared.

Fylde nearly levelled on 85 minutes when a cross from the right found Sampson unmarked six yards out, and somehow Taylor managed to push his effort over the top – a great save.

Fylde threw more men forward in the closing stages, but Quakers defended well in the last third, and all Fylde could offer was an effort right at the end that was comfortably saved by Taylor.
