Quakers 1 Newcastle United XI 5

There was plenty of consolation in defeat for Quakers after their defeat by a strong Newcastle XI.

Quakers never gave up, especially after Newcastle surged into a two goal lead after 12 minutes, and in the second half played some good football to please the Darlo fans in the 2,625 crowd.

After a brief period of opening pressure, Newcastle's Kyle Cameron had the first shot of the game, a scuffed left foot effort that went wide.

Newcastle took the lead on 6 minutes. Cameron had plenty of time and space to cross into the middle for Gael Bigirimana to help the ball on for Haris Vukic to shoot against the post, but he was on hand to turn in the rebound.

Quakers bounced back. Amar Purewal made a good run into the Newcastle box but was crowded out, then Liam Hardy found space 25 yards out and hit a right foot shot that flew just over the top.

It was 2-0 on 12 minutes, when Gary Brown was penalised for a foul 30 yards out, and Toney curled the free kick over the wall into the bottom left hand corner.

Vukic tried his luck with an ambitious 40 yarder from way out on the right when he spotted Darlington keeper Peter Jameson off his line, but his attempt drifted over the top.

The Magpies went even closer when Callum Roberts hit a fierce left foot volley across Jameson, and the ball seemed to be going into the bottom corner until Gary Brown somehow got back and hooked the ball away.

Jameson also did well to stop a Newcastle third on 26 minutes, when Toney fired powerfully towards goal from ten yards out, but Jameson reacted well and palmed his shot away.

Jameson again came to Quakers rescue on 36 minutes. Vukic skipped past three defenders as he ran into the box, but Jameson stuck out his left hand and blocked the ball.

But there was no denying the Magpies a third, Callum Roberts broke through into the Darlington box with a diagonal run to receive the ball in midfield, and after rounding Jameson hit the post, but the ball went into the net off the covering Liam Marrs.

Quakers deservedly pulled a goal back on 45 minutes. Newcastle keeper Nathan Harker was penalised for handball outside of his area, and Lewis Nightingale curled the free kick into the box from the left for Hardy to glance into the roof of the net.

Newcastle had a couple of chances at the start of the second half. Jameson held a shot from Toney high to his right, then he made a better save in Newcastle’s next attack when sub Yasinelmneny cut in from the left and hit a terrific right foot shot that Jameson touched around the post.

But it was 4-1 on 50 minutes when Lubo Satka was left completely unmarked six yards out to head in a left wing cross.

Attendance has just been announced, 2,625.

Darlo subs 55 mins: Mitchell, Gaskell, Cartman, Nowakowski for Nightingale, Portas, Hardy, Purewal

Quakers nearly got one back again on 57 minutes, when Kevin Burgess nodded down an Adam Mitchell free kick, but Gary Brown turned the ball over the top.

Darlo sub 61 minutes: Harrison Scott for Marrs

By this time, Newcastle had made 10 subs, and Darlington 6.

Substitutions were made en masse, and one of the Newcastle subs, Flaviola Silva, tried his luck from the edge of the box, but Jameson saved easily.

Quakers nearly scored again on 71 minutes, with another floated free kick by Mitchell that Adam Nowakowski headed just over the top.

Newcastle were the next team to score, when Sean Longstaff played a 1-2 with Silva, and knocked the ball past Jameson.
