Darlington defender Jack Vaulks was happy with his full debut in the 2-1 home win over Kidderminster on Saturday.
Jack had already made four sub appearances for Quakers – the first of them at Southport in September after he signed from Crook Town – and manager Tommy Wright had no hesitation in giving him his debut last Saturday against a team flying high in the table.
“I got a text from Tommy on the day before the game, saying that I was in the team,” he said.
“It came as a bit of a shock, because I’d been struggling with flu the previous week, and before that I’d been out on loan. I’d travelled a couple of times with the squad, and I hadn’t been chosen.
“I thought the game went quite well, even though I felt a bit rusty because I hadn’t played a full game for quite a while. But I felt more and more comfortable as the game went on, and I was happy with the way I played.”
Jack was pipped for the man of the match award by fellow centre half Josh Heaton.
“I thought Josh was really good, because he took the pressure off me by winning lots of headers, and we developed our understanding as the game went on. With Josh winning headers, that meant we had more possession further up the pitch and as a defence we were able to push up.
“Even though we all got together at the last moment, the back four seemed to work out well.
“It was a great playing in front of our fans. They gave me plenty of encouragement, and I was able to show them what I’m about. I think all the players gave 110 per cent because of all the support that the fans gave us.
“I thought we deserved to win because we were the better team.”
Josh is now hoping to be chosen again this Saturday for the game at Tamworth, where Quakers are looking for revenge for the 1-0 home defeat back in November.
“I hope to play on Saturday, but that’s up to the gaffer. I’ll have to see what happens.”
