Quaker U19's held to goalless draw by Boston United
MATCH REPORT | Darlington FC U19's 0-0 Boston United FC U19's
A goalless draw against Boston United in the National League Academy North yesterday afternoon extends an unbeaten start to the season to three games for The Quaker U19's.
Darlington FC U19 manager Stephen Elliott said; "I thought we put in a really impressive performance today. However, we probably didn’t do quite enough to win the game. I thought over the majority of the contest, we controlled the tempo of the game and had more possession than the opposition. Despite the dominance in possession, I felt we lacked a bit of quality and decision-making in the final third and as a result we didn’t get that much needed goal. Obviously, when the game is goalless, the opposition are always in with a chance and Boston to their credit could have nicked it late on when we switched off. We will take the point and move on to our next training session looking to improve".
Team captain Adam Groom said; "I think when you look back at the game, a draw was probably a fair result, but we had our moments and on another day we could come away with all three points. I think we defended well as a team and just lacked a little bit of conviction up top today. We have some great forward players in this team and I'm confident we will be back among the goals next week when we take on Chester. We are looking stronger each week and with a couple of key players coming back into the team next week I think we are in a really good position going forward".
The Quakers starting lineup remained unchanged from the side that drew 1-1 last week against York City. There was one change to the bench, as first year Leo Pontone replaced fellow first year Byron Dagnall.
A cagey start to the game, was brought to life in the 11th minute, when Darlington forward Raphael Oppong found a bit of space for himself on the edge of the Boston box and smashed a low driven shot past the Boston keeper only to be denied by the post.
Boston began to settle into the game, and created a couple of openings, with Boston number 9 Krisztian Gagyi looking lively. Late into the first half, the ever threatening Gagyi found space in the Darlington box and unleashed a powerful left footed shot at goal, but keeper Liam Mason stood strong and pushed the shot wide and out of danger. Halftime Darlington 0-0 Boston United.
The second half saw Darlington dominate in possession but with no real conviction in the final third. Darlington were almost made to pay, as a rare Boston attack in the 78th minute saw a Boston forward through on goal, as he took the ball past goalkeeper Liam Mason, as he looked to put the ball into the empty net but defender Sean Chidanyika covered heroically to clear the ball off the line.
Late into the game, Darlington almost snatched all three points as forward Raphael Oppong created a great opening in the box with two supporting Darlington players waiting for a pass, but Oppong chose to shoot from a tight angle and his shot was saved by the Boston keeper.
