Quaker women win local derby

Victory at Darlington Spraire

Darlington Women won their local derby against the Spraire by 3-0 to climb further up the table.

A second half brace from Chloe Ryan and another goal from Hattie Raine was enough to take home the three points. Ryan smashed the ball into the net from the penalty spot, early in the second half, before adding a second minutes later.

Spraire were still in the game at 2-0, but Hattie Raine’s goal on the 75th minute mark to make it 3-0 killed the game off and it was managed well after that with Evie Whitaker managing to keep a clean sheet between the sticks and player of the match Millie Soderman putting in an impressive display.
It was a good way to bounce back from the 4-0 home defeat by Consett last Sunday.

Manager Shaun MacKenzie said; "We were really pleased to get the three points and bounce back from the Consett defeat with only a day's rest in between. I thought the first half was a bit of a scrappy game and we struggled to get it down and lacked a bit of composure. We had a chat at half time and knew that we had the quality to win the game.

"The penalty early in the second half helped calm things down a bit and getting a second a few minutes later was exactly what we needed. Chloe Ryan always steps up when it counts, as she has done all season and those goals were her 20th and 21st goals in all competitions. That gave us the breathing space to try and control the game and Hattie who was dangerous all night, finished the game off with a third.

"What pleased me the most, was the willingness to win and get a result. We struggled against Spraire last season and didn’t really get up for the derby games. They always wanted it more than us. But I feel we have dealt with that better this season and taking six points off them proves that."
Quakers have a tough test on Sunday, they're away to league leaders Sunderland.
