Reserves bounce back with good away win

The reserves bounced back from two straight defeats and the loss of several players when they won 2-1 at South Shields Reserves in the Wearside League on Saturday.

The squad has been weakened by the departure of several players for Northern League clubs recently, but the lads who came in for them put on a great display on Saturday.

Joint manager Mark Fanning said; “We had a really good start to the game to go 2-0 up, but then after telling them to keep it tight, we conceded a goal straight after half time.

“But from then on, we kept battling and withstood the Shields’ pressure. The players showed a lot of character, and they stood up well to the more physical aspects of the game. Lee Hume and Dale Milburn made a big difference to us.”

With 16 year old Aaron Skelton in goal, Quakers went ahead in the opening minutes with a great free kick by Lee Hume, then Miles Swift scored his first ever goal for the club from the edge of the box.

Quakers conceded a poor goal to let Shields back into the game, but the lads held on for a victory that puts them into sixth place in the table.
