FA Cup second round
Altrincham 1 Darlington 2
December 8th 2001
Unibond League side Altrincham bowed out of the FA Cup with a home defeat against Division Three side Darlington.
The hosts faced a determined and well-organised Quakers side, for whom goals by Daniel Chillingworth and Neil Wainwright, either side of a Mark Maddox strike, proved enough.
Darlington gradually imposed themselves on the game and their 21st-minute opening goal was little surprise.
A long ball through the centre evaded everyone and Chillingworth, a tall striker on loan from Cambridge, chipped the ball over goalkeeper Stuart Coburn.
In the 67th minute, Altrincham equalised against the run of play when Maddox headed the ball powerfully past Andy Collett after a free-kick.
But parity was maintained for only seven minutes as Darlington regained the lead when former Sunderland midfielder Wainwright produced a superb header that left Coburn with no chance.
