Under 23s win comfortably at Wrekenton in Minor Cup

Hat trick for Jack Mortimer

Quakers are through to the second round of the Durham Minor Cup thanks to a hat trick by Jack Mortimer at Wrekenton.

Mortimer took on the scoring duties because Matthiew Kirokiro was with the first team, while Alfie Fawcett and Harry Butters added further goals.

Manager Grant Cuthbertson said; "It was a very pleasing result against a very good footballing side. We were disciplined throughout and played with lots of energy. Defensively we were very strong and played with maturity."

The game started with a decent crowd at Wrekenton’s home ground and the boys really came out the blocks. It took smart play down the left to feed the ball into Jack Mortimer, who stroked the ball home and we went in at the break 1-0 up.

In the second half, Alfie Fawcett made a blistering run down the wing, cut inside and wrapped his foot around it from 25 yards out competing against his own previous effort for goal of the season! 2-0 and a magical strike. Only a minute later Mortimer was wiped out in the box by the GK and the penalty was tidily finished by Jack for 3-0.

Dylan Helliwell came on for his debut, a lad with a great background of high level football and it showed quickly. An inch perfect ball floated to Jack in the box who headed home for his hat trick and a great assist for Dylan. The boys were focused on the clean sheet at this point, with Smith, Harvey, Southwood and Robinson all defending brilliantly from start to finish.

There was still time for one final run by the sub Harry Butters, who baited his defender into playing a cross but smashed the ball home past the keeper to make it 5-0. A top performance by all the boys today and into the next round of the cup!
