Salford City wrote the headlines last Friday night when they beat Notts County 2-0 live on BBC Two in the FA Cup first round. Second half goals from Danny Webber and Richard Allen saw the Ammies progress in front of a capacity 1400 crowd. They will be on TV again in the next round when they host our neighbours Hartlepool United.
Stourbridge also progressed after an impressive win away to Conference side Dover Athletic. Stourbridge took a lead after just eight minutes through Chris Lait. Aswad Thomas levelled for Dover, but Karl Hawley scored from the penalty spot in the 69th minute to send Stourbridge into the second round. They face fellow non-league opposition in the next round when they host Eastleigh.
Unfortunately, Barwell were knocked out of the competition, 2-0, at home to Welling. Ricky Wellard and Michael Bakare scored a goal in each half to see Welling progress.
Nantwich Town were the only one of the top four sides in league action this week and they moved up into second place with a 4-0 win at Stamford. Matthew Bailey opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time, with Elliot Osborne, Joshua Gordon and Lewis Short added the other goals in the second half.
Workington moved into the final play-off place with a 2-0 win at Sutton Coldfield Town. Matthew Tymon and Jacob Simpson scored the goals in the first sixteen minutes.
Ashton United are now just a point outside the play-off places following their latest victory. They were 3-0 ahead at Mickleover Sports thanks to a goal from Jeff King and two from Martin Pilkington. Mickleover pulled one back through Jake Bennett, but Ashton were able to hold on for a 3-1 win.
Hyde United slipped a couple of places following a surprise defeat at struggling Grantham Town. Both goals in a 2-0 win came in the final 15 minutes through Gregory Smith and Daniel Meadows.
Ramsbottom won only their second league game of the season at home to Rushall Olympic 2-1. A Mitchell Tolley own goal gave the hosts the lead before Luke Benbow levelled for Rushall. However, Ramsbottom were able to pick up the victory thanks to a late strike from Shelton Payne.
Whitby Town remain in the relegation zone after defeat at Marine. Liam Willis scored for Marine inside the first minute before Andrew Owens doubled their lead inside the first quarter of an hour. Ryan Brobbel pulled a late goal back for Whitby, but Marine held on to win the game 2-1.
Colwyn Bay were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Halesowen Town. John Marsden appeared to have won the game late on for Colwyn only for Reece Hales to earn Halesowen a point three minutes from time.
Matlock Town have moved up to 13th in the league table after a 3-0 win over Frickley Athletic. Joel Purkiss scored the first two goals, with Niall McManus sealing the win in injury time.
This coming weekend attention turns to the FA Trophy, as Darlington face a trip to Sutton Coldfield Town.
