EVO-STIK ROUND-UP WEEK 6
After a week of shocks the Evo-Stik Premier league table now sees the top 17 teams separated by just...
Darlington suffered their first home league defeat of the season at the weekend, as Hyde United picked up a victory at Heritage Park for the second weekend in a row.
The Quakers briefly went to the top of the division for 24 hours after a 1-1 draw at Ilkeston. Terry Galbraith equalised for Darlington, before Chris Hunter was sent off.
However, it was Nantwich Town who jumped up to the top of the table on goal difference. On Saturday they thrashed Grantham Town at home, 6-2. Stephen Jones and Josh Hancock both scored twice, along with goals from Matthew Kosylo and Liam Shotton. Daniel Meadows and Rhys Lewis scored the goals for Grantham, who had been 2-1 ahead.
Shotton then scored a hat-trick on Tuesday night, as Nantwich won again, this time at Barwell. Joshua Gordon also scored for Nantwich as they ran out 4-0 winners to go top.
Blyth Spartans do have a game in hand, but dropped to third place in the table after losing their second league fixture of the season on Saturday. They fell to a 3-0 defeat away to Stourbridge, thanks to goals from Matthew Dodd, Justin Richards and Karl Hawley.
Buxton are fourth despite a 2-0 defeat at Mickleover Sports at the weekend. Massiah McDonald and John McGrath scored two goals in two minutes for Mickleover just before half-time. Buxton were able to return to winning ways on Tuesday night, 2-1, at home to Ashton United. Ashley Burbeary gave Buxton the lead before Chris Baguley levelled from the penalty spot mid-way through the second half. However, Buxton won the game in stoppage time with a penalty of their own which was converted by Liam Hardy.
South Coldfield Town jumped into the final play-off position with back-to-back wins. On Saturday they won 1-0 at home to Whitby Town. Former Darlington player Mor Diop scored the only goal of the game.
Diop scored again on Tuesday away at Skelmersdale United. He opened the scoring before Daniel Mitchley levelled for Skelmersdale just after half-time. Sutton Coldfield went on to win the game, 2-1, with Kyle Bryant scoring the winner with 19 minutes left.
Frickley Athletic are just a point off the play-offs after winning one and losing one this week. On Saturday they lost at home to Halesowen Town. Jacob Hazel gave Frickley the lead in the first half. However, Keon Reffell scored two goals in the last six minutes to win the game for Halesowen 2-1.
Frickley did bounce back with a victory at Rushall Olympic on Tuesday, Hazel scoring the only goal of the game after nine minutes.
Workington are in the top ten after picking up four points this week. On Saturday they came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw at home to Barwell. Jamie Towers gave Barwell the lead in the 54th minute, but just six minutes later Conor Tinnion levelled for Workington. They were able to win 2-0 at Colwyn Bay in mid-week. Matthew Tymon gave Workington the lead just before half-time, with Tinnion sealing a 2-0 win with seven minutes left to play.
Salford City continued to struggle at home, as they failed to win at Moor Lane for the fifth game in a row on Saturday. Luke Benbow and Alex Reid both scored just before half-time to give Rushall Olympic a 2-0 lead. Richard Allen pulled a goal back for Salford, but Benbow sealed a 3-1 win for Rushall in the 90th minute.
However, Salford bounced back with a victory, 3-2, at Whitby Town on Wednesday. Danny Webber scored twice to give Salford a 2-0 lead before half-time. Goals from Lee Mason and Matthew Waters saw Whitby draw level, before Jordan Hulme won the game for Salford with five minutes left.
Hyde United added to their victories over Darlington with a huge win on Monday night at home to Stamford. Scott Spencer scored another hat-trick along with two goals from Reece Gray and strikes from Lee Neville and Ayrton Bevins. Stamford did score a consolation through Ryan Robbins, but Hyde ran out 7-1 winners.
Marine picked up three points from their two games this week. On Saturday they won 3-1 at home to Ilkeston. Andrew Owens scored twice along with a goal from Chad Whyte, before Michael Williams pulled one back for Ilkeston.
Marine then lost 1-0 at Halesowen Town. Reece Hales scoring the only goal of the game after an hour for the hosts.
Ramsbottom United are still bottom of the table and they let slip a fantastic chance to win their first game of the season. At Stamford on Saturday they were 3-0 ahead thanks to a double from Sam Grimshaw and a goal from Lee Gaskell. However, Stamford came back to earn a 3-3 draw with three goals in the final fifteen minutes. Ryan Robbins scored twice with Cameron Powell getting the equaliser in stoppage time.
Ramsbottom again suffered last minute heartache on Tuesday at home to Stourbridge. After Karl Hawley had given Stourbridge the lead, Andrew Dawson had appeared to earn Ramsbottom a point. However, Chris Lait won the game for Stourbridge in injury-time, as they ran out 2-1 winners.
Elsewhere this week Ashton United beat Skelmersdale United 5-0. Martin Pilkington, Adam Morning, Jason Gorton, Jodie Banim and Dale Johnson the scorers for Ashton.
The final game of the week saw Matlock Town and Colwyn Bay draw 1-1. Chris Sharp gave Colwyn the lead with Edward Cribley earning a point for Matlock.
Some of the Evo-Stik Premier teams are in FA Cup second round qualifying this weekend. However, the Quakers travel to Ramsbottom United in a rearranged league game. The fixture had been scheduled to be played on Tuesday night, but was brought forward due to both teams being out of the FA Cup. The teams have already met at Heritage Park this season, with Darlington winning 2-1.
