David Cork is pictured evading a tackle during the 1989-90 season, a year in which the striker endeared himself to the club’s supporters with not only his goals but also his skilful approach and close control.
He joined prior to the season, the Doncaster-born forward having begun his career at Arsenal and having spells with Huddersfield and Scunthorpe before becoming one of Brian Little’s recruits ahead of the Conference campaign.
Quick-footed Cork was a mainstay in Little’s title-winning team, missing only one league fixture in ’89-90, a 1-0 defeat at Northwich Victoria, before returning for the following game at home to Yeovil Town, which was played 28 years ago today.
Corky got the only goal of the game, the strike being his 16th and last goal of a hugely successful season.
