Liam Hughes' fabulous strike settles results as Quakers come from behind to win at Northallerton

Quakers won their second pre-season friendly with a 3-1 victory at Northern League Northallerton tonight. Liam Hughes scored the goal of the game in the dying seconds, a purler of a right foot shot from 30 yards out that left the Northallerton keeper helpless.

Quakers had the first attempt at goal in the second minute, when Liam Hughes’ shot was blocked and the ball ran for Alex Henshall, whose shot went straight at keeper Tom Dawson.

Northallerton took the lead with their first attack on 6 minutes, when a corner came in from the right, and Jim Wilson, nipped in front of everyone and turned the ball in.

Quakers replied when Liam Hughes squared the ball for the supporting Stephen Thompson, and he blasted the ball into the side netting from a tight angle.

On 11 minutes, Reece Styche nodded down a Thompson cross for Jordan Nicholson to volley at Dawson from the edge of the area.

Joe Wheatley then had a 25 yard free kick well saved by Dawson, then Simon Ainge broke through, but Dawson just managed to touch his attempted lob wide.

Quakers broke through on 17 minutes. Jordan Nicholson picked the ball up on the left, and measured his cross perfectly into the middle for Reeve Styche to charge in and head powerfully past Dawson.

Quakers were nearly in front on 22 minutes. Thompson delivered a good deep cross from the right to the far post where Ainge nodded the ball back across the six yard box for Styche, backpedalling, to head just wide.

The game quietened down until the 36th minute with a long range effort by Alex Henshall from 25 yards that Dawson held on to well.

In the second half, Joe Wheatley pounced on a clearance 20 yards and struck a low shot that Dawson saved at full stretch.

Quakers took the lead on 62 minutes when Ainge turned a ball into the box against the post, and the ball went in off the post

Sub Brandon Morrison came on, and his first touch almost led to a goal, when he quickly turned on a low ball from the right and fired just wide of the post.

Harvey Saunders then missed two chances. The first when he tried to walk the ball in after beating the keeper but his effort was blocked on the line, then he picked up an excellent through ball by Hughes, rounded the keeper, but pulled the ball wide.

But Hughes rounded off the night with an excellent goal, when he beat the keeper with a well-struck right foot shot from 30 yards
